Log friction and run a Systemise Review

2 min read Updated 05 Jul 2026

The Friction Log turns recurring operational pain into decisions. Log a snag the moment it bites — ten seconds — then, on a cadence you choose, run a short Systemise Review and decide whether each pain is worth living with, writing down, building a mechanism for, or solving with software.

The Friction Log is a habit, not a to-do list. When something snags — a stalled approval, a missing handover, a meeting that exists only to find out what's going on — you log it in ten seconds and get back to work. The point is captured pain, not captured tasks.

Then, on your own cadence, you sit down to a short Systemise Review and decide what each pain deserves. That's where the book's systemise-first thinking becomes a practical loop: recurrence, consequence and detectability decide together whether something is worth living with, writing down, building a mechanism for, or solving with software.

Log a friction

  1. Open Friction Log in the sidebar and press Log a friction.
  2. Answer What just snagged? with a short title — enough that future-you recognises it.
  3. Optionally add More context and Tie this to a project if the pain belongs to a specific piece of work.
  4. Press Log it.

You'll land back on the Friction Log with the entry showing as open. That's the whole habit — ten seconds, then back to work.

Run a Systemise Review

When your review is due, the Friction Log shows a Review due banner (and the sidebar shows a chip), and you'll get one reminder email.

  1. Press Start review — or Review now at the top of the Friction Log.
  2. For each open entry, score three things: How often does this happen?, What does it cost when it bites?, and Would you see it if it bit again? — plus What kind of pain is this?.
  3. Choose an outcome: Live with it (too rare or cheap to fix), Write it down (worth a checklist or SOP), Build a mechanism (a standing process or cadence will hold it), or Worth software (information needs to flow somewhere it currently doesn't).
  4. Press Continue → to move through your open entries.

Reviewed entries move out of your open list, and the decisions accumulate into an honest picture of where your operation loses control — and what the system, not the hero, should be doing about it.

Set your review cadence

  1. Open Friction Log and choose Change cadence (or open settings via the review banner).
  2. Pick how often the review should come due and press Save cadence.

You'll see the next due date on the Friction Log from then on. Reviews wait for you — a due review never blocks logging.

Who can do this

Everyone, on every plan — free tier included. Friction entries are private to you; nothing you log appears to your manager or team.

Frequently asked

Who can see my friction log?
Only you. Friction entries are private to the person who logged them — they don't appear in team views or manager dashboards.
What's a good review cadence?
Most people settle on every two to four weeks. Frequent enough that entries are still fresh, spaced enough that patterns have time to show. You can change it any time from Review cadence in the Friction Log settings.
Should I log one-off problems?
Log anything that snags — one-offs included. The review is where you judge recurrence. A pain you thought was a one-off showing up three times in the log is exactly the signal the review exists to catch.
Does logging a friction notify anyone?
No. Logging is a private note to your future self. Nothing is sent, assigned or escalated — decisions happen at your Systemise Review.
